So recently the unitec gallery (Unitec = where I study design) has offered me the role to design all their gallery invitations, stoked as this can go in my portfolio, not just student project work anymore, and this is my first attempt at an invite! very cool to see your own work up on the wall, gets you going you know..anyways just thought I’d share this on here, hope you like it!

INCOMING….INCOMING, NEW DESIGN HERO!

I recently went to semi permanent in Auckland, New Zealand, and if your not quite sure what I just said, Semi-permanent is a two day design event that hosts a variety of speakers from different areas of design to just basically talk about their work, directions goals and sometimes life story. Ok, up to date? Well out of all the greatness and the lameness, Kate Moross stood out in my eyes for her distinct style, her motivation and passion to make this world look and feel good and just her as a person, shes fucking awesome eh! Okay this is just a snippet from the latest assignment/project im doing which I self proclaim the “Endless” Brief, and from the start my reference is Donnie Darko, so hence the strange behavior of this piece. Exploring typography and graphics together as a whole, I wish to explore notions of our own human behavior, and our need to constantly require to know the answer, specially when the answer doesn’t exist. To put it vague and brief..why do we keep asking the question “Why”?

Wow ever had that when you hear of someone that is pretty popular or a marvel in your field of work or career path your in, and so just to be cinical and spiteful you choose to ignore everything ever said or produced from that person? Well I did, and that person was Stefan Sagmeister. ALWAYS SAGMEISTER SAGMEISTER SAGMEISTER and after so many people in so many countries raving on about this person I forced myself to look at his work, so at least I would have a knowledge or basis to furthermore ignore his work……..

WOW IM A MORON

for ignoring his work, its just a shining beacon for the over visual, under conceptual world of graphic design we live in these days, Im a poor student currently, but I valued his new book “Things I Have Learned in my Life So Far” over food this week, as I purchased this from the bookstore.

I wont go into detail about this but let me tell you it is a fantastic read, definitely check him out if your ever needing an aspiring read (and you so dont need to be a graphic designer to get it) please do check it out!

HEAR

“Now Hear is a strange one I made as it just came about whilst quite bored one rainy Europe day, I was taking photos of our apartment in Brussels as I wanted to have memories about our 2.5 years of being there, and oddly enough I took pictures of the blanket on our bed, I scanned these into my mac and thought, wow my blanket is a damn fancy texture, so from here the thought process began “I have had this blanket for years but never did I see it to be anything else but what its purpose was….A blanket” so here on in I made this, which basically says we should HEAR, see and be conscious of our surroundings, as life is screaming to be heard”

One day I might make a series out of this…watch this place and space and everything around it.

Red hiding hood overcame her struggles (well the disney version anyway) by going with her gut instinct and taking a leap of faith even if there was a chance of failure..so thats why theres also reference to this in the visual framework, but ultimately this whole work is solely up to your interpretation, but if I were you, think of it not just a 2D image, but a 3D plain, thats all.”

“Ok so has anyone seen those movies from either the 1930′s or movies that are themed to be the 1930′s with those woman in lovely little hats (Angelina in Changeling, thats all I have to quote really) that I would wear everyday if I were to don different genitalia?, well if you haven’t seen those, please do, they are remarkable, but this work highly uses the themes and dramas plagued in those movies and used a little bit of mish-mashed 80′s colours to create the stage of “Guilty as Sin”. The lies, tears and what I like best the furiousness of these woman when put on the hot seat are demonstrated with backgrounded elements of the black holes acting as the small pieces of controversial black holes that never answer themselves…Love it”

MAKE A MESS OF ME

“Make a mess of me”

So this piece is a bit enviromental and I know how there is so much of this stuff getting crammed down our thoats, So if this is too much just admire the colours and the Aesthetic, but in any case the name “make a mess of me” and the spotted image of the globe resembles what a shambles this world is or is becoming, and I know my work should evoke a sense of wrong doing and how we should rectify this, but in this instance, no. This shows the world open ended with no suggestions, as to the different styles of type shown act as a tool to give different outcomes but not really sensing which is the right answer.

ORCHID

“An Orchid Universe”

This work is well my head when I think about something or when I wish to invest value in my thoughts, and I guess in a way it embodies how everyone thinks, outwardly and expressively (well everyone but the pope) The orchid and the relating text I guess for me refers to the delicate side of all of us, ad how something so fragile has so many layers and ideas, wether it be mental or hypothetical..I in turn we are delicate beings with not a huge or great understanding of the world, yet the our feelings can be greater than this world itself.

SO IT BEGINS

Yes it does begin now, and yes I’ve started a blog when the rest of the world has finished with blogging and starting to Twitter, so go me for not conforming to the norm for once!

So for those who dont Knoow me know me, I am male who in life strives to become a god in design, as I am young and still a student ive yet to achieve such god like status, just watch this space though, literally !

Back to the basics, Im 24 right now but if those who wish to be mean and always want to know my age, I was born on 10/11/1984, so there, I can never hide my age when my skin gets all fucked up! but yes I’m still young and dumb, and thats how I like it. My life in short has been a hard road for me as I’ve had to grow up pretty fast whilst I was young as a few not nice situations have happened that someone wouldn’t have to deal with until older age but I guess I’ve had to fight through it which has made me more determined and stronger (mentally that is, physically I’m a wimp). If you really need to know what the hell happened you can ask me but for now I dont see a need to blog it right now.

So my passions in life are Graphic Design, owning a Pug dog one day and my Partner, who I couldnt have overcome a lot without him. Unless I update these things for me those things are everything, and Ok I know I dont own a Pug yet but still I know it will be a big thing for me!

Wrapping this up, From this blog (and now I sound like Anne Frank) I wish for this blog to document the war, er..I mean my life and my world, especially with design and to show you what I like, I guess what I don’t like and what I appropriate from all these things through my work..So erm..ENJOY!
